Story: Illustration competitions grapple with generative AI
As generative AI tools like Dall-E and MidJourney become more mainstream, some illustration competitions are banning the submission of AI-generated artworks.
Why it matters: Debate in the art world around the impact of technology is nothing new. But AI's unique legal and ethical considerations have prompted some organizations to take a definitive public stance. Link to full story |
Story: AI-generated digital art spurs debate about news illustrations
Artificial intelligence has seeped into many creative trades — from urban planning to translations to painting. The latest: visualizations in journalism.
Why it matters: Computers are getting better at doing what humans can do, including creating art from scratch. But design is much more than mashing together some known shapes on top of a color background. Link to full story |

Axios Visuals Deep Dive: Pandemic eating
This deep dive produced by the Axios Visuals Team focused on the accelerated transformation of the food industry during the pandemic. Axios Visuals Deep Dive: Graphing the Pandemic
The theme of this visually-focused deep dive was how the pandemic "broke the y-axis" in areas from health to transportation. America's exceptionally uneventful Fourth of July
Amateur fireworks and small backyard cookouts are winning the weekend as the coronavirus takes the flash out of the Fourth of July.
What's happening: Public parades and fireworks displays around much of the country are being cancelled to prevent mass gatherings where the virus could spread. Hot-dog contests and concerts will play to empty stands and virtual audiences — all while American pride treads an all-time low. |
Trump Tower Moscow Project
The goal of this project was to investigate Donald Trump's business ties to the Russian government. Working with fellow Axios Visual Journalist Chris Canipe, we decided to focus more specifically on a timeline around the potential Trump Tower Moscow, ranging from the 1980s to the 2016 election and beyond.
Visually, I built the look of the timeline icons using Soviet-era avant garde posters as inspiration, utilizing colors and shapes commonly found in them. The timeline itself involved carefully crafting a hierarchy between the icons, text, and arrows. Lastly, I optimized the timeline for screens from mobile to desktop. |

The Shuffling Deck of White House Staff
This 2018 project, done in conjunction with former Visuals Editor Lazaro Gamio, was intended to show the volume of turnover in the Trump White House. My contribution included research, drawing portraits of each significant member of staff that had either been hired or departed, and assistance in the design and layout of the finished chart.
